“Inset”, “sit on”, with or without draining board, Belfast, stainless, single or double bowl, ones with that daft little bowl in the middle, ceramic, granite, sit under.

We are talking a replacement kitchen sink here, so there’s one to take out. If it’s set into a work surface, then you will have a hole. There is no way you can get a new sink to fit exactly into that hole if the old one is over a year old, so the new sink will have to be bigger. The chances are, that you will be changing the tap as well, so make sure the new sink will take two taps if that’s what you want. Most are designed only for a mixer tap.

If you buy a new sink that’s much bigger you could end up with a problem. What is in the adjacent units under the work surface? If it’s drawers, then “the bowl” of the new sink might need to be fitted right where your “eating irons” are kept, which will make the drawer a tad difficult to open and you won’t be able to get your fork’n knives out!

If the new kitchen sink is to sit directly onto a free-standing unit and is not set into a work surface, then you will have no choice as to size, or possibly even design. In this case the new sink will fit the old free standing unit and there will probably be drawers on one side, so that’s where the draining board has to go.

If you mess around with the new sink design too much, there may be a problem with the waste pipework. This is adaptable of course and all problems are solvable but the more complicated the job the more it will cost. This is particularly so if washing machine and dishwasher outlets connect into the sink waste.
