“Labour” at £175 a day (tradesman) £100 (labourer), includes incidental fixings etc. and tipping. “Materials” if mentioned, are larger things (a boiler) and stuff only you can choose (tiles etc).  Also VAT must be added all round.

Fitting a Plug Hole or Waste Outlet


As far as this article is concerned, the waste means everything from the “plug hole” to the beginning of the pipe through the wall or floor.

Let’s start with the easy one, an old cloakroom basin. The waste is right there in front of you, all exposed and naked. Easy! Except there is so little room that the plumber will feel like the toilet bowl is trying to make love to him!

The kitchen sink waste is next. Once all the rusty “Brillo” pads, dead mice and leaking bleach bottles are out of the way and the shelf is out, it’s not so bad because everything is once more accessible and visible.

As plumbing jobs go, this isn’t a bad one. If he can still sit cross legged, he can get right up close and personal and do it by feel, a bit like milking a cow. His face will be making love to your cutlery drawer of course but hey, we’ve all done it. I still get Christmas cards from a potato peeler I once did a small favour for!

Whether it’s a “like for like” replacement of a leaking “waste”, or you want him to fit a different one that allows you to connect the dishwasher to the sink waste, it makes no difference.

Wastes for basins with pedestals are next. If the pedestal has to be moved, which it probably will, then the basin is likely to drop. Then there’s all the old silicone the craftsman who installed it used to stick it all together with.

The waste outlets on baths can be a nightmare or a doddle. It all depends on the bath panel and if it can be removed or not.

Wastes on showers are always a complete and utter rude word.
