Cost To Fit Skirting Boards

Job
Description
Labour
1To replace 70’s skirtings in your (completely cleared) Victorian living room, with a bay window and fireplace. You have found some lovely 7” Ogee skirtings and the builder will collect them. That’s 2 men 1 day.
£300

Plus materials etc. for the above
£100
2Same as above but if you want them in oak add
£60
3If he has to clear the room of furniture and carpets and put it all back again add…
£100
4 If he has to paint the skirts as well with 3 coats of acrylic add….
£100
5 If he has to make good the plaster add….
£100
6Your carpets will have to be cut down ever so slightly as the new skirting boards will be thicker than the daft little ones. Your chappie won’t do this but a carpet fitter will.

“Labour” at £175 a day (tradesman) £100 (labourer), includes incidental fixings etc. and tipping charges. “Materials” if mentioned, are larger things (a boiler) and stuff only you can choose (tiles etc).  Also VAT must be added all round.

Information Sheet on Fitting/Replacing Skirting Boards

I’m trying to work out why you don’t have any at the moment! I suppose some arse could have ripped them out in the seventies and now you’re looking at some horrid little 3” high strip of “modern” varnished rubbish.
If this is the case you’re lucky but if you want to replace “proper” skirting boards with something better, there will be a problem. When you rip them off the wall, it’s likely that areas of
plaster will follow them. This will have to be made good and not many carpenters can plaster! If you’ve got nasty little 70’s skirtings, the plaster will have come off the first time, so it should be ok.

When you choose the new skirting boards, try and get a design which is in keeping with the house’s age, most timber yards will have about half a dozen mouldings to choose from.
