Cost to Fit a Gas/Electric Hob

Job
Description
Labour
1A simple hob swap (gas or electric). You’ll need a Gas Safe registered fitter for the gas hob and an electrician registered to a “competent persons scheme” which means he’s qualified to “sign off” his work. Either way it’s 1 man for half a day.
£110

Plus the new unit for both these jobs  £90-£400

2To fit a gas or electric hob in a completely new position and there is a handy gas supply or a nearby electrical socket (to connect into the back of) and assuming the relevant tradesmen are happy to cut the hole in the work surface and remove/replace a cabinet or two. 1 man 1.5 days inc tipping etc.
£320
“Labour” at £175 a day (tradesman) £100 (labourer), includes incidental fixings etc. and tipping charges. “Materials” if mentioned, are larger things (a boiler) and stuff only you can choose (tiles etc).  Also VAT must be added all round.

Information Sheet on Replacing Kitchen Hobs

Thankfully you only have a few choices….. gas, electric rings or plates, ceramic or induction. Then there’s several different colours of course and different “ring” configurations but compared to sinks there’s a veritable paucity of choice!

Hobs are
all set into work surfaces and tend to be very similar in size, which in a way is worse than the sink hole problem because you can’t just “get a bigger one” and know you will be ok. You won’t know if the new hob is just too small for the old hole either, until it’s being fitted. Always buy one that you can see and measure first.

Oh no! you’ll have to go to a shop, you won’t be able to use the internet, you will have to talk to each other instead.

No matter whether it’s gas or electric, to remain within the law, the new hob will have to be fitted by a qualified person.
