1Fit coving all round a normal sized room, with a bay window and chimney breast. One man can’t do it on his own, the covings will snap, the adhesive will get everywhere, the air will turn blue, the man will storm out and three hours later the pub will be better off by £50.00! So this will take 2 men 1 day including the coving etc.

2Let’s call you an architectural purist (we’ve all been called worse). You want the real thing, which is a proper moulding, “run in” using wet plaster and a wooden mould, all done by expert plasterers. Well at least you now have a choice of moulding profiles, not just boring old “concave”. It will cost you though and the room will have to be cleared. The chaps who do it, know they are experts and charge accordingly, (our £175 a day goes out the window). So without all the furniture moving. That’s 2 men 2 days inc.materials

Don’t confuse covings with plaster mouldings. Mouldings are formed in situ by applying wet plaster then shaping it and allowing it to dry. Covings are solid plaster in a pre-moulded form (usually a long concave strip) all covered with a special paper surround to stop everything falling apart. Mouldings and covings both go in the same place though, right up in the joint where the wall meets the ceiling.

If you want an analogy (why would you)? In plastering and financial terms, mouldings are a Rolls Royce, covings are roller skates!

Covings usually come in 2.4m or 3m lengths and once they have been mitred to fit into corners are just stuck up into place, all the gaps filled (there will be gaps to fill) and then they are painted. It’s relatively quick and the effect is very pleasing in the right age of house i.e. 1930’s onwards.

Please don’t put them up in a Victorian house, this isn’t the seventies, “Z cars” is finished.
