Information Sheet on Fitting Fused Spur

Sounds a bit like an old “light programme” for little boys… ”The Fused Spur Saves the Day”! with that “Dick Barton” soundtrack in the background……… Blimey I’m old! And in case you’ve always wanted to know…. Tonto’s real name was Jay Silverheels.

Anyway were talking electrics now so……Welcome to the minefield!

This page needs to be kept simple, which means that all the highly relevant legal requirements you should be aware of, plus a detailed description of the process of installing new electrical fittings, are to be found elsewhere at
electrics…the rules

So, what exactly is a fused spur?

Let’s say you want to fit a light in the garage, you have electricity in the form of a wall socket in there, but there’s no way lights can be supplied from “the mains”, there’s too much power involved (13 amps) and the new lighting cables could set on fire. So we need to “fuse down” (to 5 amps which lighting cables
can manage), by fitting a fused spur box.

It’s the same with central heating electrics. These too require far less power, so a fused spur is fitted to “fuse down” here as well. (to 3 amps). The spur is usually a surface mounted box adjacent to an existing wall socket with a bit if white trunking covering the cable.

The whole process takes about an hour and the materials cost about £10. If he charges half a day, that’s a bit steep but quite possible (buying, travelling, parking).
