Information Sheet on Fitting a Loft Light

What on earth is wrong with the traditional method of keeping an extension cable in the loft, pulling it down, plugging it in, reaching down behind a bedside cabinet, unplugging a bedside lamp, taking it into the loft, plugging it into the lead, passing the cat box down to your wife, unplugging the lamp, trying to clean off the (now filthy) shade with your dirty fingers, plugging it back in behind the cabinet, resetting the alarm clock because you mistakenly unplugged it with the lamp, and then shoving the extension lead back into the loft until next time?
