Information Sheet on Fitting Security Lights

There are all sorts of designs of individual lights but really only two types of process. You either have lights which come on permanently at night and go off in the morning, or lights which come on only when they detect movement (at night) and then go off again a few minutes later. Each should have a switch in the house so that you can override the system. Which means you turn them on or off when you want.

The latter are operated by a PIR (passive infrared) sensor. Each light can have its own sensor so it operates in isolation to any other lights, or one sensor can be mounted somewhere which operates all the lights you may have.

Legally you must get a “qualified person” to fit electrics externally. That doesn’t just mean someone who’s a qualified electrician, he must also belong to a specific scheme. Have a look at our article on
Electrical Rules.
