Information Sheet on Replacing a Gate Valve

You have probably arrived here by mistake! If not I apologise profusely but I’m still confused how, in a world full of generic terminology (velux, cement, video), you discovered that a gate valve is a different animal to a stop cock or even a ball cock.

However, here you are thirsting for knowledge so let’s begin. Gate valves differ from stop cocks because they are designed to control water at low pressure. By that I mean water which comes from a tank which is probably in the loft, rather than “mains” water. Gate valves are operated by turning a knobbly wheel and they are usually found in the airing cupboard or loft, not under the kitchen sink. Stop cocks, which look a bit like outside taps
are usually found under the sink. Ball cocks are the automatic valves found in toilet cisterns and loft tanks.
